A portrait

 Sue.

Noli June is named for her great-granddaughter.

Sue, in her leopard fur
Sue · circa 1978

She wore fur to the grocery store. On Tuesday afternoons, she and her girlfriends gossiped, drank gin and tonics, and played mahjong while her kids rode bikes around the cul-de-sac unsupervised until the streetlights came on.

She didn't curate. She had taste. She didn't ask for permission. She didn't need to.

In the beginning

She built a life first.

Before the mahjong group and the soirées and the leopard fur, there was this: a young marriage, two children, and a husband who knew exactly what he had married.

The Tuesday group

Forty years of Tuesdays.

Every Tuesday afternoon, the same women showed up. Lena, who took her water with lemon and never quite finished it. Harriet, who attended only her own garden and reminded you of it. Jean, who fed her two white poodles paté and did not apologize.

They gathered at Sue's. The living room, the sunroom, four decades. Gin and gossip with a side of mahjong.

They didn't always play to win. They played to be there.

The girls

Four friends.

Each mat in the collection is named for one of them.

Sue

Wore fur to the grocery store. Hosted mahjong on alternating Tuesdays. Did not curate. Had taste.

Lena

Took her water with lemon. Drove a convertible. Knew everyone's birthday. Never quite finished anything.

Harriet

Old money. Brought a single dahlia in a coupe. Hosted only her own garden, and reminded everyone of it.

Jean

Fed her two white poodles paté on porcelain. Did not hide it. Did not apologize. Wore navy and rose.

In her honor

The mats are made for her. And for the women who came after.

Honoring the women who made Tuesdays non-negotiable.
